Sean Gaskell, a North Carolina-based presenter, features a combined music and educational presentation on the West African Kora. The Kora is a 21 string harp native to the Mandinka people of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau. It dates back 300 years. His adult program lasts 60 minutes and usually consists of 6-7 songs. Between songs, Gaskell talks about the Kora, how it is built, how he was introduced to it, who typically plays it, what its cultural significance is, and what it was like to live in the Gambia while he studied there. Reading Buddies is a weekly program that allows school-age students to work one-on-one with a teen volunteer to help boost reading skills such as fluency and comprehension. Once each week, a Big Buddy and a Little Buddy pair to read together. The Big Buddy’s job is to be a mentor, coach and role model to foster the little buddy's love of reading!
