Maus II: A Survivor's Tale: And Here My Troubles Began
Author
Art Spiegelman
Review
Wow. All I can say is wow.

In a span of less than two days (6/9-6/10), I managed to finish reading through both installments of Vladek Spiegelman's tales from the Holocaust that were presented to readers by his son in graphic novel form. It was brilliant to depict the Jews as mice and the Nazis as cats while using various other animal species in order to represent a host of other groups. Ultimately, though, the horrors of this tragedy were made known in a way that they haven't been before, and a lasting impression was left on readers.

The Holocaust is the Holocaust is the Holocaust, plain and simple. There is no way to erase history or decrease the shock level of the horrific crimes that were carried out by Hitler and his Nazis. No matter how many times I read through the accounts of people who were tormented and subject to the atrocities carried out by the Nazi regime, I am still horrified each and every time. In that sense, Maus was no different from any other text that I have read about this particular subject.

still, it was different--very different. Ironically, the animalistic representations of people helped to restore a sense of humanity to an oftentimes dehumanizing topic. At times I almost felt as though I was actually in the presence of Artie and Vladek, Mala and Francoise; as Vladek recounted his experiences and carried on with his daily life. His intuitiveness and resourcefulness were oftentimes highlighted in the text, and I was just left in awe after learning about the extraordinary lengths people went to in order to survive.

A second storyline developed with the magnification of the strained relationship between Art and his father as well as the attempts made to reconcile. I don't want to spoil anything by going into too much detail, but I will say this much--never, ever forget.
